An Exciting New Addition to the String Repertoire Perhaps the perfect concert piece, Six Bagatelles for Violin, Cello and Piano is challenging, sparkling and accessible, and will be greatly enjoyed by any serious piano trio, as well as audiences. The Six Bagatelles, from 2014, were originally written for oboe, bassoon and piano. The sixth Bagatelle was written specifically for Sherry Sylar, an oboist in the New York Philharmonic, as an encore for her performance at an International Double Reed Society conference. Norman Weiss’ colleague, Joyce Hammann, concertmaster for Phantom, asked him to adapt the Bagatelles for violin, cello and piano. Each are short, in varied moods, and exhibit a distinctive contemporary American sound. Nos. 1 and 5 have a common musical motive, but are opposites emotionally—one upbeat and mildly obsessive, the other serene and contemplative; No. 2 spirited yet smooth; No. 3 song-like, No. 4 marked “moto perpetuo,” quirky and agitated; and No. 6 jazzy with spiky rhythms. ~ Program notes © Todd Crow, Music Director, Mt.
