Help Us Connect Music School Alumni!
Music School of Delaware "Alumni" are those people who ever took lessons, a class, ensemble or summer program at the school. If you've enjoyed private lessons, been part of an ensemble, or attended a workshop -- that means you! Maybe you know an alumnus of the Music School -- a friend, family member, colleague? In any case, help us all reconnect to one another and to the Music School! We're hosting several alumni events this year and hope to see many familiar faces return to celebrate their Music School experience. Look for our alumni profiles in each monthly eNewsletter. Reconnect with us and encourage any alumni you know to rekindle good music memories by reaching out to us. We would love to hear about current activities of our past students! Email alumni@musicschoolofdelaware.org.

Another Alumnus Performs at Music School
Mark your calendars now and plan to join us for and evening with Music School alumnus and noted composer and performer, Wilson Somers, as he performs An Evening of Gold - From Classics to Jazz & Originals on February 16.
Not only will he perform jazz works of his musical heroes -- Brubeck and Ellington -- he'll be joined by a number of musical friends, including The Tatnall Singers, bassist Bill Stumm, alto saxophonist Ed Kirkpatrick, trumpet and flutist Stan Slotter and soprano Courtney Ames. Ames will perform a piece from Somers' most recent work, Requiem for 9/11, which premiered at The Grand Opera House in November 2012. "There is something poetic about playing on the stage where I had my first recital," notes Somers.
Tickets for this performance are $20 adults and $10 students under age 15. Call 302.762.1132 to purchase. Performance proceeds benefit The Music School of Delaware.

Faculty Focus
CHRIS BRADDOCK
Wilmington Faculty
Guitar Dept. Head Cultural Crossroads Series Coordinator
How long have you been teaching at the Music School? Since 1996. A friend was teaching here and introduced me. I was immediately drawn to the "community" feeling.
What do you do for fun on the weekends? Any free time is about my wife and two children. (My wife and I met at the Music School; the EC department conspired to set us up.)
Who is your favorite performing artist, living or dead? It's impossible to choose one. In my studio are photos of my guitar heroes: classical great Julian Bream; jazz pioneer Charlie Christian; rock virtuoso Randy Rhoads & bluegrass legend Tony Rice. True innovators in their styles, they continually inspire me!
What's your favorite thing about teaching here? I love interacting with colleagues. Their professionalism is a continual source of stimulation for me. I've formed performing groups with some teachers -- there are many precious memories there. With Cultural Crossroads, that level of organization doesn't come naturally, but it's a blast putting the events together!
What's your best advice to a young musician?Obviously make practicing a priority. Learn to interact in ensemble situations; try not to burn bridges. Get out, play and network. Listen to different music, not just your instrument. Beyond that, learn to appreciate the relationship between music and other art forms.

Alumni Across the Miles
ANNETTE GROT
When did you attend
the Music School?
Mostly the 1970s
Who was your teacher?
Sabina Girvan (violin)
What are your favorite memories of the Music School? Getting up early Saturdays to play chamber music and string ensemble;as a kid, it was a big deal to play in string ensemble. I enjoyed music theory classes with Mrs. Miles and learned a tremendous amount there. Most of all, I remember continuous encouragement from Mrs. Girvan. I wasn't her best student, but she always urged me to do my best.
Do you still play your instrument? Yes, I play occasionally in Palo Alto's Alto Philharmonic, as well as attending workshops by chamber musicians of northern California.
What advice would you give a student now? Take advantage of all the opportunities that the Music School has to offer.
What's your professional focus?Today, I am a research engineer for biotech start-up.
Tell us about your family:My husband plays clarinet; my older daughter plays violin and my younger daughter is learning to play piano and trumpet.
