Category: Violin and Piano ** Composer: Felix Mendelssohn ** Title: Sonatas for Violin and Pianoforte ** Publisher: Barenreiter Verlag ** Difficulty: A5.
Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (most often known simply as Felix Mendelssohn) composed two of these three Sonatas for Violin and Pianoforte when he was very young: the first, in F Major, was written in 1820, when he was 11; the second, Op. 4 in F Minor, came just three years later. Mendelssohn seems to have been quite fond of the key of F, because the third sonata in this volume is also in F Major, though he composed it quite a bit later than the other two - almost 20 years later, in fact, in 1838. He revised it the following year. Both versions are included in this edition.
This Urtext edition has been prepared by Hiromi Hoshino and Takeshi Kiriyama. There are two separate violin parts: one is a "clean" copy, and the other is a performance part complete with fingering and bowing markings. The edition also includes a very thorough historical context, several manuscript facsimile pages, and critical performance commentary.
