French composer Jules Emile Frederic Massenet was born May 12, 1842 in Montaud and died August 13, 1912 in Paris. He is known for oratorios, cantatas, ballets, and operas, the most famous of which are Manon and Werther. He also taught at the Conservatoire de Paris. Among his students were the composers Ernest Chausson and Gabriel Pierne. “Meditation” is the symphonic intermezzo from Massenet’s opera Thais, and is written for violin solo with orchestra accompaniment. Its original tempo marking is Andante religioso, as the opera’s main character, Thais, reflects on obtaining salvation from God. It is important to keep in mind that the intended effect of the piece is devotional, that the yearning expressed is more spiritual than physical. -Carmit Zori, November 2019 This edition contains the solo part and the accompanying piano part. The violin part and the piano part were edited by Carmit Zori.
