Samuel Barber composed his Cello Sonata when he was 22 years old, dedicating the piece to his composition professor at the Curtis Institute. Primarily in c minor, the sonata is characterized by interesting and exciting rhythms and harmonies, sometimes soulful, sometimes turbulent. The cello and piano frequently trade the lead, with the piano occasionally going on almost improvisational tangents, particularly in the third movement.Published by G.
