Product Description

Category: Violin solo (and Timpani) ** Title: Cadenzas for Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 61 ** Composer: Tetzlaff, Christian ** Publisher: Schott Edition ** Difficulty: A6 ** Comments: This edition contains an explanatory preface by Tetzlaff.

There are numerous cadenzas for Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 61 - it seems like almost every major performer has his or her own version. Appropriately so, as the intended purpose of a cadenza is that it give the performer a chance to show improvisatory, personal skill. This set of cadenzas by violinist Christian Tetzlaff is slightly unusual: the cadenza to the first movement contains a part for...timpani? As Tetzlaff explains in the preface to this edition, he was following a precedent set by Beethoven himself in including a part for timpani in these cadenzas. Apparently, in Beethoven's 5th piano concerto, the composer wrote out the cadenza (to prevent the performer's showiness from getting in the way of his music), which included a dialogue between piano and timpani. Tetzlaff adapted this idea to the violin concerto and wrote his cadenza around that. The cadenzas to the 2nd and 3rd movements are for violin alone.
