Louis Spohr was a renowned violin virtuoso in late 18th and early 19th centuries. He also composed a great deal, including opera, chamber music, and symphonic works. This Barcarole, Op. 135, No. 1 was part of a set of miniatures or salon pieces he composed for violin and piano. They were some of his most wildly popular compositions, and he played them often for others, with his wife accompanying him on the piano. As for this particular piece, Wolfgang Birtel (editor of this edition) states:

"With its rocking 6/8 rhythm, soothing mood, flowing and enticing melodies this salon piece displays the typical characteristics of the Barcarolle, a Venetian gondoliers song. It is a delightful musical gem that makes a pretty item for a concert program or a charming encore piece."
