Ravel's fascination with Spanish music gave rise to his Piece En Forme De Habanera. Composed as a vocalise (song without words, often a virtuosic exercise) for Bass voice, Ravel later transcribed it for Cello and Piano. Staggeringly difficult for voice, the work is just as virtuosic for cello.
