Rachmaninoffs Sonata for Cello and Piano in G Minor, Opus 19, is a wonderful example of the originality, depth, and gorgeous melody that the composer is known for. This Sonata is also among the most challenging pieces in the cello repertoire, both technically and expressively. As rich and difficult as the cello part is, the piano part is even more so -- perhaps due to Rachmaninoff himself being a brilliant pianist. The result of the difficulty and beauty of this music, though, is that it is one of the most rewarding to put together.
