Jean-Marie Leclair (called "the Elder," so as not to be confused with his younger brother of the same name), was a French Baroque violinist-composer who employed elements of the Italian style in his music, having studied the tradition established by Corelli. Though he wrote many sonatas and concertos for violin, few of those are well known today. Of the sonatas for violin and continuo, the most popular is undoubtedly the Sonata in D Major, Op. 9, No. 3. It is a bright, sunny work in four movements, rife with ornaments and double-stops. This edition for violin and piano contains a part for cello or bass ad lib.
