Product Description

Janáček, Leoš - Works for Violin and Piano - Score and Parts - edited by Jan Krejčí and Alena Němcová - Bärenreiter Verlag URTEXT.

After his pieces for solo piano, Janáček's Works for Violin and Piano make up the second largest category in his catalogue of instrumental chamber works.  Though piano was his primary instrument, Janáček was at least proficient at the violin, which may explain the volume of work.  The four pieces included in this collection are certainly not the only ones he ever wrote for the two instruments, but they are the only ones still in existence today.  The Sonata for violin and piano is probably the best-known of these pieces, and also the most difficult.  Romance is an intermediate-level composition, written as an assignment while Janáček was a student at the Leipzig Conservatory.  It was the fourth of a number of such sketches; the rest have never been published.  Dumka is a classic Slavic-style piece that alternates between extremes in character.  The final piece in the collection, Supplementum: Allegro, is actually a sketch from a second version of the Sonata, based on the extant copies of Janáček's manuscripts.

This Urtext edition has been compiled and edited by Jan Krejčí and Alena Němcová, and contains historical and performance notes.  Published by Bärenreiter Verlag.
