Hear the Spirit of America was written in response to the events of Sept. 11, 2001, to inspire courage and strength in the American people.
There are three sections. The first begins with a martial theme, optimistic in tone; ominous undercurrents are then resolved into calm determination. The second section is pastoral and lyrical and is intended to express the beauty of the natural landscape and the joy one can experience in an atmostphere of peace and freedom. It ends with the last few notes of Taps. The third section is hymnlike in character and grows steadily toward a very powerful and triumphant climax.
The piece makes for a satisfying, emotional and courageous recital encore.
