Product Description

Category: Bass and Piano ** Title: Concerto for Bass Viol and Orchestra ** Composer: Harbison, John ** Publisher: Associated Music Publishers, Inc. ** Difficulty: A6.

The modern bass (also called the double bass or contrabass) is the last survivor of the medieval viol family. Unlike the violin, viola, and cello, the bass retains the distinctive body shape of the viol, as well as the tuning scheme (in fourths, rather than fifths) of its ancestors. John Harbison alludes to that history in his Concerto for Bass Viol and Orchestra, which consists of three movements with historically-charged titles: a Lamento, a Cavatina, and a Rondo. The bass line throughout is melodic, departing from the traditional role of the instrument as a harmonic support to an ensemble. The piece received its premiere in 2006 with Joel Quarrington as soloist, accompanied by the Toronto Symphony.

This edition is for bass with piano reduction; actually, it contains two piano reductions: one for concert tuning, and one for solo tuning.
