Daugherty, Michael - Fire and Blood - Violin and Piano - Hendon Music Edition.

Michael Daughertys violin concerto Fire and Blood was commissioned by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and premiered in 2003 by the DSO and Ida Kavafian. The work was inspired by Diego Riveras famous "Detroit Industry" murals, housed at the Detroit Institute of Arts, which depict scenes from the early days of the automobile industry that formed the backbone of the citys economy. Each movement represents a different element of those paintings: the first movement, entitled "Volcano," is all about fire - fire from factory furnaces, and fire from real volcanoes, like the ones surrounding Riveras hometown of Mexico City. "River Rouge," the second movement, nods to both the real river of that name upon which one of the largest auto factories was built, and also to the red color of blood, which appears often in the paintings. The final movement, "Assembly Line," is a mechanical ode to the collaboration of man and machine, and the golden years of industrial America.

This edition for violin and piano reduction is arranged by the composer, and the violin part is edited by Ida Kavafian. Published by Hendon Music (Boosey & Hawkes). Distributed by Hal Leonard.

Difficulty: A6.
