One of his earliest chamber works, William Bolcom's 'Pastorale for Violin and Piano' was premiered in 1962, with Bolcom's composition teacher (and the work's dedicatee), John Verrall, on the violin. The piece is in three short movements, which follow the unusual pattern of fast-moderate-slow, with the middle movement being a set of variations. Best suited to advanced players, Pastorale would also make a great introduction to contemporary music for the advanced student.
