The 'String Quartet No. 3' by Bela Bartok is the shortest of his six quartets, typically lasting only about 15 minutes. It is significant in its experimental nature as well, incorporating several extended techniques the composer would become known for, including the 'Bartok pizzicato', in which the string is plucked upward with such force that the rebounding string makes contact with the wood of the fingerboard, causing a snapping sound. Dedicated to the Musical Society Fund of Philadelphia, the work was premiered in 1929.
